  • 21 October 2024 - Podcast: The new SRF Podcast series "Die Cookiefalle" features Verena Zimmermann and our collaborator Nico Ebert. It explains what happens if you "Accept all" and what the challenges with today's cookie interfaces are. Check it out on external page SRF (in German).
  • 30 September 2024 - EuroUSEC Presentation: At the external page EuroUSEC 2024 conference in Karlstad, Lorin Schöni presented our paper, external page You Know What? - Evaluation of a Personalised Phishing Training Based on Users' Phishing Knowledge and Detection Skills. The paper discusses the need for personalised phishing training and presents a method for implementing it.
  • 28 August 2024 - RTS Radio Broadcast with Noé Zufferey: In the radio episode "Montres connectées et sécurité" Noé discusses his research on the potential to infer personality traits from smartwatch data, such as step count.   • 20 August 2024 - Team Event: We had the pleasure of spending a sunny afternoon on Lake Zurich, enjoying Stand Up Paddling with the entire team.

  • 24 June 2024 - external page Swiss IT Leadership Forum: Together with external page Christine Fahlberg from Swisscard Verena Zimmermann had the pleasure of shining a light on both the practical and research perspectives on Security Awareness and the Human Factor in Security. The historical hotel Schatzalp in Davos was a great scene for the intense exchange on cybersecurity.
  • 20/21 June 2024 - Team Retreat: We met in beautiful Weggis, nestled at the serene Lake of Lucerne, for our second team retreat, to reflect on what we achieved. We had an amazing time discussing our research and to plan for what lies ahead.
  • 17 May 2024 - Innovedum Project Granted: We are so happy to have the chance to develop a learning tool that aims to leverage the benefits of personalizing learning content to students while making the privacy implications thereof graspable and controllable. The project is labelled "PIA - Privacy Implications of AI-based Personalized Learning Tools" and financially supoorted by Innovedum.
  • 14 May 2024 - Paper accepted: Congratulations to Neele Roch who has an article accepted at the external page Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security entitled "Navigating Autonomy: Unveiling Security Experts' - Perspectives on Augmented Intelligence in Cybersecurity". She will present our work in August in Philadelphia.
  • 7th May 2024 - external page Dr. Verena Distler from the University of the Bundeswehr, Munich, gave a talk in the Behavioral Studies Colloquium entitled “Mechanisms of Manipulation: How Technology Users Interact with Manipulative and Deceptive Communication.”
  • 9th April 2024 - We hacked the hacker! Together with partners from CYREN ZH, we played the Escape Room at Switch. It was great fun to increase our cybersecurity awareness and learn about password hashes and security. Thanks to Switch and Fabio Greiner!
  • 20th March - Swiss Cyber Circle: What an interesting session with the external page Swiss Cyber Circle focusing on how to prepare for and train for cybersecurity crisis that we supported as a research partner. Thanks to everyone involved and the hosts Milena Thalmann, Peter Kosel and Stefan von Rohr.
  • 23rd February 2024 - HCI@ETH: The SPG group is part of HCI@ETH, a great initiative to make human-computer interaction research at ETHZ visible and to connect related groups across departments. Check our the new corresponding website.
  • 1st February 2024 - Informatiktage: The SPG team will proudly support the Informatiktage 2024 at ETH with a talk on "Mensch-Computer-Interaktion: Der Mensch als Sicherheitsfaktor" on Saturday 23rd March. For more details please see the external page program.
  • 17th January 2024 - Swiss Cyber Circle: Verena Zimmermann, Lorin Schöni and Neele Roch led a workshop on "Can IT Security learn from Safety?" in this year's first session of the external page Swiss Cyber Circle. Thanks to the great organizing commitee and the engaging discussions with the participating CISOs. We are looking forward to the next sessions.

2023

  • 8th December 2023 - Xmas dinner & event: Beautiful hike in the snow from Üetliberg to Felsenegg with well-deserved dinner there.
  • 14th November 2023 - ETH AI Center: Verena Zimmermann is now part of the ETH AI Center faculty as an associated member. We are looking forward to a great collaboration and exciting AI-related projects in the context of human-centered security and privacy research. The ETH AI Center is also currently seeking candidates for PhD/Post-Doc positions, including with a focus on human-centered AI and security/privacy aspects. The application deadline is November 22, 2023.
  • 26th October - Security Awareness Day: Verena Zimmermann had the opportunity to speak at the external page #SecurityAwarenessDay organised by SWITCH in Bern. She talked about how we can move from what we can't do to what we can do to enhance cybersecurity resilience. Take a look at the external page video.   • 28th September 2023 - Guest Speaker: Our Visiting Researcher, Jennifer Klütsch, will hold a talk from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. on "Privacy Research, its Experimental Approaches and Statistical Data Analysis". If you are interested, we are happy to send the zoom link.
  • 6th September 2023 – ETH Industry Day: The Security, Privacy and Society group participated in the ETH Industry Day with Prof. Verena Zimmermann as a speaker and a booth in the exhibition. We enjoyed the interesting exchanges with people from industry and academia alike. Find more information about the industry day and with a short video.
  • 29th August 2023 - PostDoc Position: We offer a 100% PostDoc position in human-​centered security and privacy research.
  • 18th August - Book published: The book external page "Human Factors in Privacy Research" to which Verena Zimmermann contributed a chapter on privacy nudges is available now open access.
  • 14th August - CASA Summer School: Verena Zimmermann was invited as a speaker to the external page CASA Summer School at Ruhr University Bochum where she also introduced a game-​based approach to cybersecurity that she works on with Linda Fanconi
  • 10/11th August - Team Retreat: In our first team retreat we had the option to not only work intensely on our projects but also to enjoy the beautiful external page Kartause Ittingen and surroundings.

  • 17th May - Karen Renaud: We welcomed external page Dr. Karen Renaud from the Strathclyde University, Glasgow as guest speaker. She gave a talk in the ISTP Colloquium and contributed to an event with our collaboration partners from the Digital Society Initiative and the project CYREN-ZH.
  • 5th April 2023 - Podcast: With great pleasure Verena Zimmermann was interviewed for the podcast series "Frauen machen MINT" ("Women do STEM") by the external page Femtec.Alumnae e.V.   • 14th March 2023 - Globe Magazine of ETH: The current issue of the Globe Magazine of ETH features an interview conversation with Prof. Verena Zimmermann, Prof. Joachim Buhmann and Prof. Elgar Fleisch on the role of emotions in the area of human-technology interaction and AI.   • 08th March 2023 - Inaugural Lecture: Verena Zimmermann gave her Inaugural Lecture with the title "Security, Differently: Rethinking the Role of the Human in Cybersecurity".
  • 21st February 2023 - Guest speaker: Our Visiting Researcher, Alina Stöver, will be the speaker within the Behavioural Studies Colloquium.

2022

  • 30th November 2022 - ETH unterwegs: On Wednesday, the 30th November, the ETH Zürich initiative "ETH unterwegs" will visit the Kantonsschule Schaffhausen. Verena Zimmermann will be there to introduce Human-Computer Interaction as a topic. Take a look at the initiative.
  • 29th November 2022 - Guest speaker: We welcome Dr. Nina Gerber as a guest speaker within the Behavioural Studies Colloquium.
  • 27th October 2022 - ETHZ Cyber Group Meet & Greet: The ETH Cyber Group organizes an annual Meet & Greet on the 27th October. This year’s topic will be: "Humans: the weakest link in Cyber Security?". Verena Zimmermann has been invited as a keynote speaker on the role of the human in cybersecurity.
  • 20th October 2022 - ZISC Seminar series: Within the Zurich Information Security and Privacy Center (ZISC) seminar series, Verena Zimmermann will give a talk on “Human-centered Security & Privacy” on the 20th October. For more information about the talk.
  • 12th October 2022 - ISTP Colloquium: On the 12th October, Verena Zimmermann, will give a lecture within the Institute for Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) colloquium on “Digital Nudging . Too much or not enough?”. More information about the lecture.
  • 3rd October 2022 - Welcome Lorin: The Security, Privacy and Society Group welcomes Lorin Schöni, who joins as PhD student after completing his Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Zurich.

  • International Symposium on Technikpsychologie (TecPsy) in 2023: One of our collaboration partners, the work and engineering pychology group at TU Darmstadt/Germany, organizes the International Symposium on Technikpsychologie (TecPsy) in February 2023.
